Trevethy QuoitOS Ref: SX 259 688 Type: Dolmen Access: Good Disabled: OK with sticks or crutches, but no wheelchair
There are 7 slabs, which are all huge - the capstone is estimated to weigh 10.5 tons. The capstone is at an angle due to the inward collapse of the rear slab, which has marks like cupmarks in - 5 of them. Set in a large field, one of the noticeable features is the hole in the capstone. One supposes that there is some astronomical alignment which once lit up the interior of the front of the structure at a particular moment. Cornish portal tombs sometimes have flanking stones that project over the front of the chamber and Trevethy is an example of this style. A small part-enclosed space thus exists before the front closure stone. Only one flanking stone can now be seen. A small rectangular opening has been cut into the bottom right of the front closure stone. This would permit access to the burial chamber for multiple burials or movement of the body/bodies, something we know happened in Neolithic times.
The locals seem proud of their monument and a house- garage has it painted on the side. On the dull day we arrived we momentarily mistook the painted one, in the distance, for the real one! The Garage with the painted side
